At the time, a casting director discovered him while he was looking for cowboys to feature in a beer commercial. Then, he was picked up to play the Marlboro Man, and eventually got modelling roles for Calvin Klein. He started acting in 1986 when he bagged a role in CBS’ soap opera Dallas.
In 1989, Johnson got to star in Always and played the famous role of Ted Baker. His co-stars were Holly Hunter and Richard Dreyfuss, and it was a remake of A Guy Named Joe (1943).
