Peter debuted in the 1950s and soon became a well-known face after a number of different supporting roles on stage, tv, radio, and movies. He had a specialization in playing tough roles like police officers, secret agents, and authoritarian elders.

Some of the TV shows and movies in which he has been a part includes Porridge, Citizen Smith, Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, Our Friends in the North, Merchant Ivory’s The Remains of the Day, HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Vaughan considered himself as a character actor who was unable to do romantic leads due to the looks.

“If you’re a character actor, you don’t need to wait for the next leading role,” he once said. “But if you are a leading man you have to wait for the next part. Sometimes that means long periods without work.”

Maybe this is the reason, why did he never out of work for long. He felt a little bored for being recognized only for Porridge.

“It bores me rigid,” he once said. “I only did about four episodes and the film but never has a role been written that has had more impact.”

But, soon he came into the limelight once again. He got famous in the younger audience for his role in the Game of Thrones. He remained a part of the show for five years.

“I’ve been so lucky with parts,” he told BBC Surrey recently in one of his last interviews in November. “They talk about actors resting. The only time I have ever rested in my 77 years as an actor has been when I’ve wanted to. Lucky, lucky, lucky.”

A number of actors and celebs paid tributes to him. Many of them shared on Twitter. One of them is Blackadder actor Tony Robinson, who wrote on Twitter: “An amazing actor. I’ll never forget his performance in Our Friends in the North.”

In the meantime, some posted pictures on social media. Actress Kathy Burke posted a photo of Vaughan with Ronnie Barker in Porridge alongside the words: “Beautiful Peter Vaughan.”

Vaughan married two times. His first wife was actress Billie Whitelaw. They remained married for 14 years until 1966 and then married Lillias Walker.

He was the father-in-law of Gregor Fisher, the actor best known for playing the comic character, Rab C Nesbitt.
