Happy Pongal 2017 Images: Also known as Thai Pongal, the harvest festival majorly observed by the Tamil people living all across India. It spans over four days in the 2nd week of the first month of the Georgian calendar. Most of the times, it falls on 15th January. It’s not just a religious festival, but also a cultural one which is celebrated for four days in a row. People thanks Surya for giving them wealth and prosperity. Pongal literally means overflowing in Tamil. As per rituals, people boil milk in new pots, home decorations with banana and mango leaves and draw rangoli with rice flour. Sweets are a major of this festival too. Pongal is made with rice, cardamom, jaggery, raisins, green gram, and cashew nuts which are then offered to the Sun. The first day – Bhogi is dedicated to the Indra – the rain god. This day includes throwing out of the unused items in fire and dance by girls around it at home. At the same time, they praise the God.

The second day of the puja, people follow a custom of boiling up of the milk in new pots and decorating it at their homes.  The third day is known as Mattu Pongal which is said to be the day of cows. The bovines are decorated with bells, flowers, and beads, and fed withPongal. Moreover, there is always a bullfight occasion, which is known as Jallikkattu.

The fourth day is known as Kannum Pongal. On this day, the leftover meals are served on a turmeric leaf with rice, betel leaves, betel nuts, turmeric leaves, plantains and two pieces of sugarcane.
