This festival is regarded as the shifting of the Sun along its celestial path into the zodiac sign of Makra (Capricorn) as per the Hindu calendar. As per the beliefs, Makar Sankranthi symbolises the start of a new year / spring in India. Traditionally, it is one of the few festivals which falls on the same day as of the Georgian calendar every year on 15th January. However, the date the may differ but rarely.
