People believe that Asura king Mahabali returns every year on this day to visit his people. Then, he is again sent to the netherworld (Pathalam or Paataal Lok) by Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar.

The highlights of this festival are colorful rituals and ceremonies which include flower carpet (pokkalam), lavish food (sadya), engaging and exciting activities like dance (thiruvathirakali), tiger dance (pulikali), tug-of-war (vandamvalli), and boat race (vallamkali).
Keralites are seen donned in traditional attire which is white and golden saree for women and shirt and mundu for men. It is the attire of the state. It (ഓണം) is a harvest and state festival which starts from Eve (Uthradom) to its 3rd day.
The activities also include Onathappan, Thumbi Thullal, Kummati kali, Onathallu, Onavillu, Kazhchakkula, Onapottan, Atthachamayam, etc.
