Overview
The first One day was played at Basin Reserve in Wellington in which Pakistan won the toss and chose to bowl. NZ was full of confidence after their series win in the T20 series by 2-1 and they were here to beat Pakistan again. Martin Guptill and Tom Latham opened the innings for the home side but both went away very cheaply as Guptill made 11 off 17 runs and Tom made 11 off 15 balls.
After that Kane Williamson and Henry, Nichols came to the bat and against Williamson went cheaply as he made 10 off 17 balls but Nichols stayed and took responsibility for the innings and made 82 off 111 balls with seven fours. Then the tailenders batted beautifully as Micthell Santner, Matt Henry and Mitchell McCleneghan made 48, 48 and 31 runs respectively and helped their team reach a respectable total of 280 in 50 overs with 20 extras. Mohammad Amir and Anwar Ali both bowled well with 3-28 and 3-66 and were the best bowlers in that innings.
Pakistan needed a win here as they have already lost their T20 series and wanted to start this series with a high but again they were not able to bat up to their standard as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and no one really took charge of the innings. Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez played well as they made 62 and 42 respectively but apart from them nobody really clicked and they were all out for 210 in 46 overs and lost the game by 70 runs.
