Sanjay Leela Bhansali locked Salman Khan for the film but he walked out of the project due to personal issues and other professional differences. Sanjay Leela Bhansali then kept the film on hold and he moved on with his future projects.
After some terrific performances by Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela, the director felt that Ranveer and Deepika will be the best choices for his magnum opus Bajirao Mastani. The movie has been planned to be made on a massive budget of Rs 250 crores. The movie has been shot for over 2 years and Ranveer prepared for the role and he has been specially trained for over six months for the film.
Ranveer Singh played Peshwa Bajirao in the movie and he tonsured his head for the film. Deepika Padukone played the other lead role Mastani in the movie and Priyanka Chopra played Kashibhai in the film.
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone have been the major highlights of the film and they impressed the audience with their performances throughout the movie. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s BM had a clash with Shahrukh Khan’s Dilwale at the boxoffice and Dilwale dominated its competitor during the initial weekend.

Bajirao Mastani had a wide release in over 6000 screens across the world but the movie opened to 60% occupancy. The movie just collected Rs 12 crores on its first day and the collections witnessed stability during the weekdays after a decent first weekend. The film collected Rs 166.15 crores in 22 days of its boxoffice run among the domestic circles.
On its 23rd day the movie collected Rs 40 lakhs making the total Rs 166.55 crores. Sanjay Leela Bhansali in association with Eros International produced the movie which collected Rs 270 crores worldwide in 23 days of its run.
