This 5-day festival period starts with Dhanteras, on this day Lord Kuber is worshipped and business class people like to buy some stuff with precious metals, utensils, etc. as they consider it to be a good sign. People deal in gold, silver, and other metals as it is believed that it brings fortune. Then, comes Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi. As per the Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu and Kali Maa killed an Asura named Narakasura. Festivities continue on this day too.
Then comes the main festival day, i.e., Deepavali. At night, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped mainly. Lakshmi pujan is conducted special at many households, business places for their well-being and prosperity. People wait for it to arrive. After that, the fourth day is celebrated as the Govardhan pooja. Speaking of mythological descriptions, on this day Lord Krishna picked the Govardhan mountain on his little finger and saved the villagers from heavy rainfall. The last event in the schedule is Bhaiya Dooj aka Bhau Beej. It is considered to create a special bond between brother and sister.
