The first test was played at the Hagley Oval where Australia won the toss and opted to bowl.

New Zealand now had to start good and make a good total in the first innings if they want to get Australia under any kind of pressure. Martin Guptill and Tom Latham opened the innings for the home side but both got out cheaply and it was Hazelwood who dismissed both of them. Guptill made 18 off 18 balls with three fours and Latham made 6 off 6 balls with one four. After that Kane Williamson and Henry Nichols came on to the field and this time Siddle got both of them out cheaply, Williamson made 16 off 18 balls with four fours and Nicholls made 8 off 13 balls. McCullum got out on a duck, Anderson made 38 off 87 balls with six fours. BJ Watling made 17 off 51 balls, Mark Craig made 41 off 57 balls and Trent Boult made 24 off 22 balls with three sixes. Hazelwood took 4-42 in 14 overs he bowled and was the pick of the bowlers, Siddle and Lyon took three wickets each.

Australia made a huge total in response to New Zealand’s total as they made 562 in 154.2 overs. Usman Khwaja made 140 off 216 balls with 25 fours and Adam Voges made 239 off 364 balls with 30 fours and three sixes. Nevill and Siddle made 32 and 49 respectively.

New Zealand was all out for 327 in 104.3 overs in the second innings and lost the game by an innings and 52 runs.
