The first test was played at the Hagley Oval where Australia won the toss and opted to bowl.
New Zealand now had to start good and make a good total in the first innings if they want to get Australia under any kind of pressure. Martin Guptill and Tom Latham opened the innings for the home side but both got out cheaply and it was Hazelwood who dismissed both of them.
