It marks the victory of Lord Krishna over Indra and saved the entire village from the rains by lifting the Gobardhan parvat. It is observed on 4th day of Deepawali. It is regarded as the 1st day of Shukla Paksha as per the lunar calendar in Katik month. (read: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo movie review.)

It falls on Pratipada Tithi while starting time may fall on or one day before fo Amavasya day as per the Hindu Calendar.

Speaking of Maharashtra state, it is also known as Bali Padva. Another mythological story is that Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu over King Bali and then pushed him to Patal Lok. Then, on this day, King Bali on Prithivi Lok.

It is also popularly known as Annakut Pooja. It is the custom and ritual to cook food using wheat, rice, gram flour, and vegetables to offer to God Krishan. Generally, it is observed on the same day as of Gujarati New Year.
