A mother, Marie Ayala, has been charged after her 2-year-old boy shot his father, Reggie Mabry, in an accident. Ayala is now facing criminal charges, authorities in Florida told The Reporter Times.
The 26-year-old Reggie Mabry was shot dead in May 2022. At the time, he was playing a video game when his 2-year-old son fired a gun accidentally in their home. Per the police report, Mabry used to live with his wife Maria Ayala and their three children in metro Orlando.
OC Sheriff John Mina said at a news conference that the gun was not properly stored. It was easily accessible and as a result, a tragedy happened and a man lost his life.
The 28-year-old Marie Ayala has been charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, and violation of probation.
Both Marie Ayala and Reggie Mabry had been on probation for child neglect and narcotics possession. (also check: Alec John Such Cause of Death.)
A jail record revealed that Ayala was in jail on no bond Monday. Not many details are out at the moment, but the public defender’s office was representing her.
Sheriff Mina told TheReporterTimes that Marie Ayala was seen performing CPR when the authorities arrived. On the day of the shooting, Mabry was admitted to a hospital but doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Per police records, all three children were at home at the time of the shooting. Initially, evidence indicated that it could have been a suicide too.
But, during the investigation, it was revealed that Reggie Mabry and Ayala’s son whose age is 2 had fired the gun. Marie revealed it to the police that her five-year-old boy told her that his two-year brother fired the gun accidentally.
The five-year-old boy said the exact same thing when he was asked by the authorities. But he couldn’t explain how his younger brother had obtained the firearm. (also read: Metro Boomin’s Mother Killed by Husband Who Died by Suicide Afterwards.)
Mina said that the gun was in the room where the children were playing while Ayala was in a different room when the shooting happened.
All three children were not harmed. Florida Department of Children and Families have them in their custody.
The tragedy didn’t have taken place if the gun was properly stored in the first place. The young children have effectively lost their parents now. And, a boy will live his life knowing that he shot his father.
The names of the three children of the late Reggie Mabry and Marie Ayala are not yet.
